ISSUE 136 – SINGULAR MATERIALITY

€11

Overview

The option of designing a work which will consist, first and foremost, of one material only and will show itself as or will represent a construction in a single mode is an exercise in self-restraint and discipline. It means abstaining from taking sensual pleasure from its textures and colours in the completed project, but also from the mental enjoyment of devising combinations and eloquent details which the single material - or its representation - will finally reduce to mere assemblage. Here architecture is coming close to sculpture.
The ancient theatre and the classical temple are the best known examples of singular materiality. In these, the architectural type and the singular materiality, already reduced to a material system orientated towards the achievement of a specific result, co-exist. Because the type is a diagram, the material construction can crystallise out into a system.
